Truth and Justice
Truth and Justice („Tõde ja õigus“) is a novel about Indrek Paas. Yet because his story flows through all five volumes like a long river, there are probably not many who have had the stamina to accompany Indrek on the entire journey, from source to mouth. This dramatization attempts to do just that. For this reason, it focuses on those events and characters that are of decisive importance in Indrek’s life, even though Tammsaare’s world is as rich and variegated as a jungle at night, and one could dive into it and find material for dozens more plays.
Tammsaare’s novel begins with a man and a woman, Andres and Krõõt, arriving at Vargamäe. It ends with a man and a woman, Indrek and Tiina, departing from Vargamäe. Between these two moments lies everything else: Indrek’s searchings and discoveries, his joys and sufferings. Between them are contained truth and justice, but fortunately also love and compassion.
